A Random Act of Kindness: Helping Someone Smile
There is an old lady in our village who lives all alone. She was married
and had two children but things went south and she left her husband and
took her daughter with her. She spent years working odd jobs just so
she could raise her daughter and save up some money for herself. Then
her daughter grew up and got married -- and left her all alone. The
daughter never calls, never writes, and it's all as if her mother just
didn't exist.
Being a close friend of my parents, she would visit us often and we try
our best to share whatever we can with her. A few months back, the hand
pump in her home broke. She was trying to pump some water and the handle
suddenly snapped loose and hit her under her chin. She got hurt and
most of her teeth became loose. She had a hard time eating since then
and had to make do with soft food.
Three weeks back, she dropped by our home and I told my father about how
her teeth would visibly move when she speaks that evening. My Dad then
decided that we will take her to the dentist (as I was going to the
dentist anyway for fillings) and we will pay for her dental treatment.
She still needs to have a tooth extracted after which the dentist will
fit her with dentures. My Dad pays for all the dentist's bills, and the
medications she needs to take after an extraction. My Dad says he wants
to help her to smile again.
